About the writer

Dean Butler

Dean Butler wearing a black cowboy hat

I was raised on a ranch near Lance Creek in eastern Wyoming. Ranch life taught me about hard work, responsibility, and facing life as it comes. I later served in the United States Marine Corps from 1969 to 1971.

The most important day of my life was January 24, 1974. That was the day I gave my life to Jesus Christ. More than fifty-two years have passed since then. I have not always gotten everything right, but Christ has remained faithful through every season of my life.

At the age of forty, I earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Eastern New Mexico University. I have worked as a cowboy, ranch hand, welder, correctional officer, and pastor. But I never expected to become a writer. That changed in April 2024, when I felt the Lord leading me to begin writing about His Word.

Since then, I have written more than 700 Bible essays and several books. I write The Other Side of Amen blog and a weekly newspaper column carried by five Wyoming newspapers. I also share daily Bible teachings, essays, Scripture, questions, and memes through my personal Facebook page and four Facebook groups I started. My writing is also shared through Pinterest and Substack, and some of my work has appeared in a David C Cook publication.

The mission of The Other Side of Amen is simple. I want to lead the lost to salvation through repentance and faith in Jesus Christ, teach believers the truth of God’s Word, warn against false teaching, and call Christians to live what they claim to believe. I try to keep everything biblical, plain, and easy to understand.

I am an old Wyoming cowboy, a Marine Corps veteran, a former pastor, a husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, Christian writer, and Bible teacher. But above everything else, I am a follower of Jesus Christ.

“What I write is not for everyone, but what I write is meant for someone.”
